Über die Veranstaltung

Speculative Design is a critical design practice and may be understood as a new approach in the creative field – an open set of tools, techniques and methods. Speculative Architecture mostly creates narratives about how new technologies and networks influence society and space, by imagining where new forms of agency exist within the cities. The purpose is not to create a utopian or dystopian vision of the future, but to address challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. The objective is to open up a discourse on what the future is ought to be.  Testing ground for this design method will be the area of the Urfahraner Markt, a huge empty void with a lot of opportunities and potential for the future of Linz. During the workshop, students will develop scenarios for the site based on technological progress, political-, societal- or environmental change and speculate on their impact on the city. Within three sessions in May, an overview about the approach will be given and recent speculative projects in architecture will be shown. Students will form groups and define the driving focus of their scenario. In June, the groups will produce artifacts (images, videos, etc.) documenting their scenario.
